how to overcome creative block

5 Ways to Overcome Creative Block

It's 3 PM on a Sunday afternoon and you still have creative block. You're at a standstill. We've all been there - creative person or not. It may just be that you are having difficulty making a decision, that you just don't even know where to start anymore, or that you forgot the reason you wanted to start in the first place. It's the most frustrating feeling in the world.

BUT once you come out of that creative block, you blossom.

Here are 5 ways to get yourself out of a creative block.

1.) Accept the Facts

Accepting the facts means you realize you are starving, angry, or possibly on the verge of a mental breakdown. It also means it is time to take care of yourself! It could be grabbing lunch with a friend, taking a nice bubble bath, going for a joy ride,  or watching a movie you have been dying to watch.

Moments like these should remind you to refocus and move away from your work. The best work comes from taking breaks and letting your mind recharge. Dare yourself to move away from your work and do something self-caring.

2.) Music Fuels Creativity

Every time I find myself in a creative rut, I always turn to trusty Spotify to help regain those creative juices. Find a playlist on Spotify from the hundreds they have that make you happy or inspired. Play upon the emotions you want to convey in your work and music is a good canvas to do so. If finding a playlist seems too tedious, just finding a song that makes you feel good is always a great way to cure a creative rut.

Try listening to Spotify’s Feel Good Music playlist and dance like no one is watching. Maybe even try singing and just letting it all out.

3.) Get Outdoors

One of the best ways to combat a growing creative block is to get outdoors and workout. The magic behind working out is that you feel better because of the natural endorphins that put your mind and body into perspective.

If working out is not your forte, make it a fun activity you are actually eager to do. It does not even need to be the classic treadmill run, it could be a hike or a jog around the neighborhood.

4.) Change Up the Scene

Often times, the same routine we have gets us into the same mindset. But it also has your creativity bogged down by a lack of change in your environment. The best moments of creativity happen when you venture outside the realm of your daily routine. Try going to a coffee shop where you can still focus, but you can experience a different ambiance. Or if you need a more drastic change, take a trip somewhere and experience a new culture. This will open your mind and unleash new ideas.

5.) Journal

Journaling is a soothing activity that allows you to take a break from your creative scene and just jot down anything and everything. Journal inner thoughts, worries, quotes, goals, writing snippets – anything that motivates you. You can find new ideas while doing this and also look back on your notes later for some inspiration.

Above all, creativity comes from a constant changing environment and a desire to immerse yourself in what inspires you. There is no definite way to seek creativity in moments like these but the best way to combat a creative standstill is take a step back and breathe for a moment.
